What Can I do to Help?
You can make a difference in helping these fish species at risk from right inside your own back yard!
- Take action to improve water quality, plant trees, and reduce erosion.
- Learn more about fish species that are at risk by reviewing the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Species at Risk Act (SARA).
- Participate in a Species at Risk Recovery Team
- Implement 'best management practices' such as tree planting projects or septic system improvements to improve water quality and habitat conditions for these species.
Recovery Project Profiles
Long Point - Wetland Restoration Project
A restoration strategy has been developed for the Long Point Crown Marsh, the Long Point Causeway and other private marshes in the LP Complex. This project targets a key wetland restoration project that utilizes passive wetland restoration through reshaping the profile of the marsh in cattail monocultures filled by unnatural amounts of sediments. It will also provide SAR habitat and corridors for several species through the restoration of hydrological regimes, biodiversity, decreased sedimentation and the control of invasive species.
Long Point Waterfowl Unit Rehabilitation Project: Channel Maintenance and Habitat Restoration
The goal of this project is to develop a healthy and self-sustaining ecosystem in the Long Point Waterfowl Unit that will contribute to the ecological, economic and social health of the unit and its user groups. One example of a strategy that would be used to help achieve this goal is to protect, rehabilitate and restore fish and wildlife habitat.
