Flood & Erosion Protection Projects
Flood and erosion protection projects are a key component of ERCA's very comprehensive floodplain regulations programs. Input into municipal planning for new development helps to ensure that new development is protected from the dangers of flooding and erosion, but helping to protect homes and properties that pre-date our regulations program is also an important aspect of what we do.
Over the past thirty years, ERCA has protected, enhanced and restored over 8 kilometers of shoreline in the City of Windsor, particularly along the stretch of Windsor Riverfront Parks. Major flood control works undertaken in the mid-1980s to the Little River Dykes in East Windsor have been recently upgraded and repaired to provide flood protection to more than 2000 flood-prone homes and the Sewage Treatment Plant. The Turkey Creek flood control channels originally constructed in the early 1990s have been upgraded, and significant flood protection works along the Belle River have been undertaken. Low flow channel rehabilitation and flood level attenuation has been completed along the channels of the Belle River and Canard River. Major repairs and upgrades to the armour stone dykes at Pelee Island, helps to protect many homes, property and Municipal infrastructure from future wave damage and flooding.
These are just a sampling of the many projects that ERCA has undertaken in partnership with member municipalities to protect homes and people from the dangers of flooding and erosion.
