Renewable Energy

The Hillman Marsh Solar Power Project

Hillman Marsh has 12 photovoltaic cells that generate clean renewable energy, offsetting our electrical consumption of traditional sources of electricity that create greenhouse gases and contribute to climate change. In addition to reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we produce through electricity consumption, we are also reducing our electricity costs at the same time!

The Province of Ontario offers two programs to assist homeowners interested in generating their own electricity.

Net Metering:
Ontario's net metering regulation allows you to send electricity generated from renewable sources to the electrical grid for a credit toward your energy costs. Your utility will subtract the value of electricity you supply to the grid from the value of what you take from the grid. What you'll see on your bill is the "net" difference between those two amounts. If you supply power that is worth more than what you take from the grid over the billing period, you'll receive a credit that can help lower future energy bills.

Standard Offer Program:
Ontario's Standard Offer Program allows you to generate electricity and sell it to the province at a guaranteed price for 20 years; ensuring homeowners will see a return on their renewable energy installation.

Visitors to Hillman Marsh Conservation Area can view the solar panels on the Nature Centre, learn more from the interpretive display and see exactly how much electricity is being generated.

Students can take part in ERCA's hands-on, curriculum based Energy Programs for grade 5 classes at Hillman Marsh Conservation Area or book an Energy Program to come to your school for grade 5, 9 and 10 levels.
