Happy Birthday Homestead!

The John R. Park Homestead Conservation Area opened as a museum in 1978. This year we celebrate three decades of hands-on history at the museum on the lake. More than half a million people have visited the Homestead over the years to try blacksmithing, fireplace cooking or tapping a maple tree; and to imagine themselves in the past.

While old fashioned in most ways, the Homestead has embraced modern technology. We have a Facebook page where former staff and volunteers can post memories. Two special guests this summer were John R.'s great grandsons Fred and Ernest from Arizona. They discovered the family link on the Internet through www.erca.org.

When you turn thirty you may consider a makeover. When you reach 166 years old you really need it! On October 5th, our M.P.P. Bruce Crozier announced a Job Creation Partnership program through Service Ontario, funding six workers to learn building restoration skills as the 1842 house gets clapboard repairs, a new cedar shingle roof and rebuilt porches. Thanks to all the individuals and organizations that supported our signature quilt fundraiser and raffle; and the paint and technical advice provided by Benjamin Moore Ltd., the Park family's house will be secured for another winter.

In a separate initiative, Home Depot Walker Road provided a "Day of Service" to the Homestead in September. Twenty associates volunteered their time, while the store and corporate office provided materials to repair the wood siding and stain three of the small outbuildings. The Home Depot team even built a new wooden window for the blacksmith shop.
